Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands offers diverse habitat that’s ideal for targeting bonefish. You’ll find everything from expansive white sand flats and turtle grass to backcountry creeks and ocean-side edges. Most flats are firm-bottomed, making them perfect for wade fishing. The fishery here allows for technical shots and challenging presentations for larger than average specimens.
Bonefish in our area average between 3 and 4 pounds, with regular shots at fish in the 5 to 8 pound range. We also see larger singles and doubles regularly. If you're coming from a numbers-heavy destination, expect fewer fish but better quality. This is a fishery where you’ll find meaningful, rewarding opportunities rather than volume.
Our fish are often feeding over white sand and can be selective. We lean on subtle, lightly weighted shrimp patterns in tan, white, and mottled tones. To help you prepare, check out our detailed Bahamas Bonefish Fly Selection Guide, which breaks down fly choice by depth and fish behavior.
Not at all. Most shots are within 30 to 50 feet. Accurate, quiet presentations are far more important than raw distance. Our guides are there to help you read the fish, position for the best angle, and coach you through the shot. Bonefish are pretty honest and are an ideal species for learning and sharpening your flats game.
Yes. Many of our favorite flats are perfect for wading due to their shallow depth and firm, sand or Mottled bottoms. When conditions are right, we often step off the skiff to stalk fish on foot. Wading offers more control, a closer connection to the fish, and a quieter approach.
An 8-weight rod is your go-to. Match it with a tropical floating line, a solid drag reel, and 9 to 12 foot fluorocarbon leaders. Fly sizes typically range from 4 to 8. You can learn more about how we match fly weight and hook size to water conditions in our Fly Selection Methodology.
Focus on stealth, line control, and mindset. Bonefish are alert, fast, and thrive on the flats by avoiding predators. A quiet approach and calm demeanor go a long way. You’ll want to understand how to lead fish and how to strip effectively. If you’re curious about how conditions can shape your experience, read What to Expect Fishing the Berrys.
Yes. We practice catch and release exclusively and take extra care with handling, including debarbed hooks, proper landing techniques, and limiting fight time. Conservation is central to what we do, and we believe that respecting the fishery is part of being a good angler and a good guest to the Bahamas.
